ASC award-winning cinematographer Bradford Lipson recently used TruColor HS fixtures on the set of The Wedding Ringer, a comedy starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, and Kaley Cuoco slated for a January 2015 release.

“I was ecstatic with the HS lights,” Lipson said. “They mixed well with both HMI’s and tungsten units and they were very easy to work with. These lights are fantastic for location work, easy to rig or hide, and because they are low amperage lights they can be plugged in almost anywhere.”

“Most of the new LED lights I see on the market are way too “sourcey” because of the numerous diodes that are actually the light source,” Lipson explained. “I love the organic feel of the HS due to the panel design. Because the panels are actually the light source, the initial quality of light is good, and from there I liked the ease at which I could further augment the quality of light I was looking for.”

Lipson also liked working with the HS because he could run them off house power, minimizing cable runs and equipment and preventing a heavy impact on locations. “One situation I think of is when we were shooting in this wonderful condo in a high-rise building in downtown Los Angeles,” Lipson recalls. “One of the primary reasons we were there was for the great view of downtown, with two sides of the condo being nothing but these fantastic huge windows. We didn’t want to do a long cable run to the street so my gaffer had a tie-in done, I think we only had 100 amps to work with. Between the small HMI’s and HS lights I was able light Kevin Hart and Josh Gad and still hold exposure on the exterior.”

“I will absolutely be using the HS lights on my upcoming projects,” said Lipson. “They are going to be perfect for the next feature I am doing.
