BRADFORD LIPSON SHOOTS THE WEDDING RINGER WITH HS

BRADFORD LIPSON SHOOTS THE WEDDING RINGER WITH HS

ASC award-winning cinematographer Bradford Lipson recently used TruColor HS fixtures on the set of The Wedding Ringer, a comedy starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, and Kaley Cuoco slated for a January 2015 release.

“I was ecstatic with the HS lights,” Lipson said. “They mixed well with both HMI’s and tungsten units and they were very easy to work with. These lights are fantastic for location work, easy to rig or hide, and because they are low amperage lights they can be plugged in almost anywhere.”

“Most of the new LED lights I see on the market are way too “sourcey” because of the numerous diodes that are actually the light source,” Lipson explained. “I love the organic feel of the HS due to the panel design. Because the panels are actually the light source, the initial quality of light is good, and from there I liked the ease at which I could further augment the quality of light I was looking for.”

Lipson also liked working with the HS because he could run them off house power, minimizing cable runs and equipment and preventing a heavy impact on locations. “One situation I think of is when we were shooting in this wonderful condo in a high-rise building in downtown Los Angeles,” Lipson recalls. “One of the primary reasons we were there was for the great view of downtown, with two sides of the condo being nothing but these fantastic huge windows. We didn’t want to do a long cable run to the street so my gaffer had a tie-in done, I think we only had 100 amps to work with. Between the small HMI’s and HS lights I was able light Kevin Hart and Josh Gad and still hold exposure on the exterior.”

“I will absolutely be using the HS lights on my upcoming projects,” said Lipson. “They are going to be perfect for the next feature I am doing.

RE-LIGHTING JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! WITH TRUCOLOR

RE-LIGHTING JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! WITH TRUCOLOR

The Jimmy Kimmel Live! show has just completed a comprehensive update of their lighting grid, adding both TruColor HS™ and TruColor LS™ lighting systems from Cineo Lighting.

Lighting Designer Christian Hibbard, who received an Emmy in 2011 for his work on the Jimmy Kimmel show chose TruColor for its their ability to match traditional tungsten fixtures while reducing the overall HVAC load in the small, historic theater. “Our maximum load before the changeover was 3,305 amps; with the new system we are at 1,075 amps. We calculate that the change in equipment will pay for itself in four and a half years, just in power, globes and labor. This does not include savings in air conditioning, which is also substantial.”

DPS, a leading L.A.-based lighting supplier, provided (12) LS and (18) HS fixtures to replace existing 1K and 2K tungsten zip lights.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! originates from the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, and airs weeknights on ABC.

PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON’S LATEST FILM USES TRUCOLOR HS

Inherent Vice, the latest feature in production from Director Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will be Blood), has recently completed principle photography in Los Angeles.

DP Robert Elswit worked with gaffer Mike Bauman, who offered the following comments about TruColor HS: “Awesome. We keyed the entire thing with them due to firepower. Cineo really kicked it on output. Elswit loves it.”

Baumann measured 500 fc@6′ in the lighting rig shown above.

The Warner Brothers film stars Jenna Malone, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and is scheduled for release in 2014.

TRUCOLOR HS LIGHTS VIPS AT THE BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC TENNIS TOURNAMENT

TRUCOLOR HS LIGHTS VIPS AT THE BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC TENNIS TOURNAMENT

For the 5 minute video that captures the event, Bank of the West hired director Danny Nieder, who set up a dedicated area under shade trees so DPs Art Adams, Brian Relph and Donovan Sell could shoot interviews with bank personnel and clients.

Two TruColor HS lights were used to create a natural balance and fill. Coupled with their small size, color accuracy and high output, the HS delivers a soft light source unmatched by other lights.

An additional challenge was the lack of available 220V power. Due to the open layout of the venue, a generator was not an option. The low power consumption of the HS permitted two lights to be run off one 110V outlet all day with no issues. Moving and adjusting the solid state HS is no problem as they can be turned on and off at will and can withstand jarring with no ill effects.

Comet, an independent comedy/drama currently in post-production chose TruColor HS and TruColor LS for lighting both studio and location shooting.

Cinematographer Eric Koretz said,”I’m a big fan of soft lighting, and the TruColor fixtures gave us plenty of beautiful soft light to work with. We used them for interiors and daytime exteriors throughout the production…really versatile tools!”

Comet is scheduled for release in 2014, starring Emily Rossum.

TLCI LIGHTING STANDARD

CINEO’S TRUCOLOR HS AND LS RECEIVE HIGHEST RATINGS ON NEW BROADCAST MEASUREMENT STANDARD

On June 24, 2013 a workshop jointly organized by the EBU and the
Guild of Television Cameramen brought industry experts together at
BSkyB’s Sky Studios near London to learn about the EBU’s new LED
light assessment tools. Former BBC broadcast engineer and color
sciences expert Alan Roberts presented the Television Lighting
Consistency Index.

The TLCI was developed by the EBU to address many of the issues
associated with the use of LED lighting in film and television
production. Several manufacturers of lighting products brought
fixtures for evaluation using the calibrated TLCI-2012 testing setup at
the event.

The results: TruColor HS achieved the highest TLCI rating of all LED
fixtures tested, with a rating of 98 at both 3200K and 5600K,
matching the ratings of HMI and surpassing those of fluorescent
fixtures. Complete TLCI ratings for all CCTs on both TruColor HS and
TruColor LS are now available at cineolighting.co. Learn more
